Shield Pro Hard Drive Crashed?

Ok... so this is going to be a long post. I'm putting it up here because I cannot comprehend whether my situation warrants a hard disk replacement or if it can be fixed as is. Here goes:

I set up my Shield Pro for format and reset. I opted for full format. It kept erasing for more than 3 hours and then suddenly I see a 'dead android' with an red exclamation mark on the screen.
Powered off and again restarted the STV and it goes back to the erasing screen and after about 10 minutes, it shows the same 'dead android' with an red exclamation mark on the screen.

I figured that it probably is a hard drive issue since the STV is booting but not going further than erasing and hanging. So downloaded the image files for the 500GB Shield from the NVidia website along with fastboot and adb and connected my Shield to the PC and booted to the fastboot menu. This is where I'm hitting a stonewall. I cannot it get the bootloader to unlock with the fastboot oem unlock command. It gives me an error saying (Failed: Read less bytes than expected). I can't go any further than this.

I contacted the NVidia reps but other than moronic troubleshooting steps, they have been catatonic. I have received the usual 'we will contact you in 24 hours' email from NVidia but nothing so far. I am not hoping for much either, since I bought this in the US and currently am in India. Whatever has to be done will have to be done by me.

Thanks in advance for any solution that can help me get out of this mess. :)
