What is Android Auto?

I realise its a really stupid question. But from what i can gather Android thats on the joying/ownice Chinese head units is just generic 4.4.# with some changes... But not Android Auto. So far google hasn't really shed any light on what Auto actually is...

Anyone care to explain? Is it a modified interface? a set of programs? I guess its still base android?
