Xiaomi Mi 8 now comes in a 8GB RAM/128GB storage model

Xiaomi Mi 8

Xiaomi has launched two Qualcomm Snapdragon 845-powered flagships so far: the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S and the Xiaomi Mi 8. (The company's Black Shark subsidiary has also launched a Snapdragon 845-powered gaming phone, but it doesn't run MIUI.) The Pocophone F1 will be another Snapdragon 845-powered Xiaomi flagship, and the company is developing more phones as well. The key differentiating factor with the Xiaomi flagship phones is availability. The Mi Mix 2S is available in a few international markets (excluding India), while the Mi 8 remains a China-only phone for now.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 was launched in China in May. It was accompanied by the mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 710-powered Xiaomi Mi 8 SE as well as the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition, a higher-end variant of the Mi 8 which has an in-display fingerprint sensor, a transparent back, and iPhone X-style 3D face unlock. The Mi 8 Explorer Edition went on sale this month, and it comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Now, Xiaomi has launched a 8GB RAM/128GB storage variant of the Xiaomi Mi 8 in China.

Xiaomi had originally launched the Mi 8 in three variants: 6GB of RAM with 64GB/128GB/256GB of storage. The 8GB RAM variant is priced at CNY 3299 ($479), which is the same price as the 6GB RAM/256GB storage variant. Therefore, buyers are getting more RAM for the same price with the 8GB RAM variant, but the trade-off here is that they will get only half the amount of internal storage. This means that the Mi 8 now comes in four RAM/storage configurations.

At launch, the company had stated that the Mi 8 is the world's first smartphone to support dual-frequency GPS. It uses the newer, more powerful L5 band on top of the common L1 band to increase navigation accuracy by three to five times. Most of its specifications are similar to the Mi Mix 2S, but it does differentiate itself with a 6.21-inch notched AMOLED display, lack of wireless charging, and a higher-resolution 20MP front-facing camera.

The Mi 8 still remains one of the cheapest Snapdragon 845-powered flagship smartphones in China, with a starting price of just $420. The 8GB RAM/128GB storage variant comes only in Black and Blue colors, and it will go on sale at 10AM China Time today via JD.com and Mi.com. The phone's specifications are noted below.
